Ditch your car keys and get moving

So you spent your weekend walking around Dubai Mall checking out those 70% discounts, and now your legs hurt from all that exercise. You feel like you have burned thousands of calories and that you’re now as healthy as can be. Well, unfortunately, you’re not. While you don’t have to break the bank for an expensive gym membership, or on buying a treadmill and dumbbells for your home, you do have to make an effort for your ‘exercise’ to count.

The World Health Organization recommends that people aged 5 to 17 should have at least 60 minutes of moderate activity daily. Those aged 18 to 64 years should perform at least 150 min of moderate activity or at least 75 min of vigorous activity throughout the week. The same goes for those over 65 but with a focus on activities to help enhance balance and to prevent falls.

What does that mean? It means that for exercise to be effective, it needs to make your heart beat pretty fast, and make your muscles stretch and work. This could be through leisurely activity such as walking and hiking, moderate resistance training such as weight lifting, and stretching exercises such as yoga. And the earlier you start, the better. So, you could make your weekend at Dubai Mall count as exercise if you do it right: put on your running shoes and comfortable clothes, and turn your stroll into a brisk walk without stopping for at least 30 minutes. Park your car as far from the entrance and possible. Or better yet, ditch your car keys and take the metro.

That’s sure to get your heart pumping, and you’ll definitely feel the calories burning away.
