Ways to sneak more exercise into your life

Working out doesn’t have to feel like work

With a little creativity, you can sneak exercise into your day, adding extra steps and building muscle as you go. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week.

Here are tips to help you achieve those goals:

Take the stairs
Just because an elevator is an option it doesn’t mean you have to use it. If your workplace is at the 33rd floor, use the lift to get up to the 30th, then take the stairs up to your office!

When your house is clean, you feel better, and when you work out, you feel better, right?
Kill two birds with one stone by cleanercising! Any type of cleaning gets you moving, but some activities sneak in a workout, like vacuuming and mowing the lawn. As for the other tasks, add in some dance moves as you clean and you’re off to a good start!

Find an active hobby
If you are not interested in highly physical sports such as football or swimming, you may dance your way into shape! Be it salsa, or else, it’s fun, social and gets that heart pumping! Dancing is a great way to burn calories. Not a dancer? What about bowling? It doubles as a workout, exercising muscles throughout your body. (Just skip the nachos and soda drinks, or they will more than compensate for your losses).

Some other ideas: Hiking, gardening or table tennis. Anything that gets you on your feet is a great start, and can help burn those unnecessary calories.

Make it social
Meet up with friends and see if they’d like to go for a walk, even if that means walking to dinner. By asking others to join in, it’s more fun for you and you could be making an impact on their health, too.

Many health problems can be helped by regular physical activity
Even if you have a health problem which you feel interferes with your ability to be active, do check with your doctor – they can help recommend the amount and type of activity that is right for you.
